Retro Camping Light with Modern Features
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 місяці тому
This is a light from 1971 that is controlled by and charges my phone. I found it in a thrift store in Oregon and really like the look of it. It’s 50 years old so it didn’t look great. I gutted it and replaced the electronics. Not sure why I’m saying this. It’s all in the video. Are you crazy enough to want to make this? Here are the 3D files: mattthedesigner.com/pages/safari-lite Here’s what I ...
Car Camp on Warm Nights With This Invention (V2)

The best car camping window cover explained!
Переглядів 40 тис.Рік тому
Most people use refletix to cover their windows when camping or living in their cars. This is my take on a better version of that. There are almost 1M views on the build video for this so I'm answering a few of the most asked questions here.
Bear Proof Car Camping Kitchen Setup

#1 DIY Roof Rack Thanks to This Guy. Here's how to make it.
Переглядів 174 тис.Рік тому
You really only see two DIY roof racks on UA-cam. After building this Unistrut rack I can see why it's the most popular and may even be the best. It was easy to make, cheap compared to Yakima or Thule, and in my opinion more versatile. In this video I mostly focus on cross bars for my 2014 Honda CRV but this would easily extend into whatever kind of SUV roof rack you’d like to make. This video ...
Car Camper Storage and Entertainment Solved
Переглядів 55 тис.2 роки тому
I’ve been on a mission to make our car camping experience more comfortable for when we’re caught in a heavy rain or stuck stealth camping in a Walmart parking lot. We’re not quite ready for full on van life yet so for now I’m making the Honda CRV (a relatively compact SUV) or weekend warrior vehicle. The templates below should work for all 4th Generation Honda CRVs. Tablet Mount: amzn.to/3N0LKl...
DIY Soft Box Lighting for Workshop Videos & Photos
Переглядів 12 тис.2 роки тому
Lights that are not diffused cause my bald head to shine like a mirror in the afternoon sun. I made these soft boxes to diffuse the light and make it wrap my face more evenly like that hot shot Marques Brownlee. Do people read these on #Shorts? Yes I could have purchased these but they wouldn't have been custom fitted to my garage and I would have spent a lot more to get the same amount of ligh...
Collapsible Removable Platform and Drawers
Переглядів 215 тис.2 роки тому
After a year with our first SUV Camper Bed I redesigned and built it to address a few issues we had. The car camping platform has a drawer and a semi secret compartment to stash your valuables. It’s pretty easy to make and hopefully this information is generic enough to be applied to any car, van, crossover, or SUV sleeping or leveling platform. Use this to make a cheap roof rack. #Shorts

The cheapest, easiest, roof rack I could make was a $23 fence from the hardware store. But you can DIY all kinds of things into a roof rack with the right size couplings. For my 2014 CRV Couplings: amzn.to/3GxPGsj Bolts: amzn.to/3A6BqnY Spacers: amzn.to/3Ki2a9J Fence: bit.ly/3GzcTu4 #shorts
Make a workbench from scrap wood!
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
I’ve been working in this garage shop for about a year and it was high-time for an upgraded workbench. It had to be cheap because I knew I'd mess some things up on the first try. Luckily there was a bunch of junk 2x4’s, 2x6’s, and MDF in the rafters and I salvaged some wood from the bench that came with the garage. I’d say it turned out to be a decent starter workbench. Someday I’ll make a stur...
Car Camping Cooling + Ventilation to Stop Condensation
Переглядів 126 тис.2 роки тому
Waking up wet will make you wince. But for real, we were sick of waking up feeling like we were in the splash zone. Having just a little airflow through your car or SUV camper will make it way more comfortable. We’ve been pointing the fan in, which wasn’t the original plan but it feels amazing. One of these paired with a window covering that allows you to crack a window or two makes it way bett...
A New Kind of Car Camping Window Cover
Переглядів 40 тис.2 роки тому
I'm sure no two rear car windows are the same shape but they're definitely all useless. So I used ours to solve the age old “gotta pee in the middle of the night where’s my flashlight?” problem any self respecting car camper has run into. This is a 2014 Honda CRV but hopefully you’re able to create a similar storage solution for your car or SUV camper based on this. This is also a great way to ...
DIY Laptop Sleeve + Backpack - Waterproof, Lightweight, Padded

Description I was inspired by ultralight backpacking gear to make a waterproof, lightweight, laptop bag that doubles as a backpack when I feel like walking to work. The fabric is called Dyneema it basically indestructible because it’s original use was for sailboat sales. It is super slim so it’s a great padded laptop sleeve that slides into other larger bags when needed but when I want to use i...
great blokey project!
Would the insurance assholes have anything to say about this though if you got into an accident with this attached? I don’t know I’m genuinely wondering if it would or not.
I loved the video thank you!
If you blocked the light then why need the snorkel?
Excellent!
Outstanding!
Ingenious design! I wonder if a couple of strips of double sided Velcro would work better to hold the battery in place? Then they could be adjusted if you change the size or shape of the battery.
You're not only a designer and engineer - you're a film maker and a comedian! Kept me - as someone with zero interest in the subject matter - engaged and entertained til THE END. ☺️
Super well done! Would it be an idea to paint the back side black?
Yep. I did eventually.
Why dose the algorithms show me the video now. And why dont i get actually entertaining videos recommended as the old days 😢
Is this one of the entertaining ones?
Where did you get the plastic sheet

Did you do any prep for the bedliner paint? I hear you have to prep galvanized metal before painting. If you didn’t how has to paint held up? Thanks.
@@mikereedy2978 I used the strut that has a green paint coating already. I sanded that lightly before the bed liner and it’s holding up really well. It’s worn off in a few high friction places but the green layer is there as backup.
@@MattTheDesigner Thank you for the reply. That’s exactly what I needed to know.
Great video. Do you have information on the water tank? Is it just DIY PVC pipe?
Yep. Really just a pipe, end caps, a faucet, and a mouth to pour the water in. It was made before I started the channel. Maybe I should make a short about it.
@@MattTheDesigner Most of what I've seen are ABS showers. I'd prefer your video sense of humor and style better anyway 😉 get that legit yt plaque 😂
Just take me money I need this 🥺
Not sure if you’ve already figured this out by now but the newer Anker batteries will turn off if the load doesn’t draw enough current. Evidently the fans use very little power compared to recharging a phone. You can override this cutoff by double pressing the button. My model changes one of the LED colours when you do this.
Yea someone else let me know. Silly that I didn’t know that but it’s what I get for never reading an instruction manual in my entire life.
For extra strength on your beta build you could weld the ends of those side plates to the angle iron pieces on the corners.
Hopefully this year I’ll learn to weld.
Can't you just make a 'Starter Kit' and Sell it to those who are not quite as Handy as you??? I bet you'd make a Fortune!!! Blessings
I took a step in that direction on the updated build. Checkout that vid.
I actually appreciate your slow upload pace. There are so many channels that upload quantity over quality that hitting the notification bell on just a few will inundate us with notifications. Your channel, due to quality over quantity, has earned a notification bell from me. Thank you for your hard work. (I've mimicked some of your builds already over the last few years. Obviously, mine look "DIY", unlike your prefessional look.)
I’ll only post videos I actually like haha. Thanks for saying this!!
What a brilliant idea!! I think I’ll do this in my workshop. Thanks!!

Soldering iron. $6. Harbor Freight. P.S. you're brilliant!
you could probably do with just leaving the side wiindows open a bit and having the exhaust fans.... the exhaust fans removing air from the car will automatically draw air from outside via the windows...(or if you fit a vent lower down, from there.... some of the campervans have vents lower down, so it draws in the cooler air..)
When it’s not too hot we just use the vents. But when it’s hotter the wind from the window fans makes it feel cooler even if it’s not.
I personally would want to make the outside reflective the matte black will probably heat up fast and the snorkel will help to also heat all the air thats drawn in. And as someone into PC Building and therefore also cooling, I don’t think a blower fan is what I‘d want the static pressure is a bit low for the snorkel probably. The question is what do you mean by stealth either you want no light getting in or no on the outside being able to look inside. For the latter I‘d just use a dust filter for PC fans.
No light out is the goal.
what software did you use for testing the designing ?
I used sketchup to make the plan. I used my body to test the platform.
That fan will get hot.
Maybe. Check out the newer version.
I've lived in cars for years, gotten great at fabricating all kinds of organization out of all kinds of eclectic objects, but I've never thought to use a plastic like that! This general method opens up all kinds of new ideas for me, thanks! Very cool design as well
Great video!
I'm going to recommend using PETG for your 3D printer. Cost is only a few bucks more than PLA but it'll handle the heat way better than PLA! (I also make parts for cars....Honda Elements specifically actually).
9:55 the one battery banks might not have a low power mode, or a special way to enable low power mode.
I want to recommend you experiment with a flexible cutting board from Dollar tree as a building material.
That’s a really good idea. I’ll explore that.
😂 @3:05
This is brilliant. I’m just learning to design on iPad and SketchUp. Did you use an Apple Pencil to design?
I have one now. But dont think I had the iPad when I made this. I like sketchup on the iPad but it’s missing a few of the features the desktop version has.
Glad to have randomly stumbled across this video as I've been trying to figure out ways to keep cool while camping. I'm now gonna look into rigging up something similar. Thanks for the design/ideas and the inspiration!
Good luck Elijah! Let me know how it goes.
Слишком много вентиляторов. Для всей схемы достаточно одного подходящего по производительности и шуму. И это в разы упростит всё, без потери качества вентиляции.
Please consider making a fan that pulls AC from a pick up cab to the truck bed that has a cap on it. 🙏 I’m trying to design one now cause we take road trips with 3 large dogs and I need to keep them safe and healthy. Thanks for considering. I cannot believe a product for this doesn’t exist yet!
I’m back and forth between getting a van or a truck. Depending on where I land I might make something like that in the next year or so. No plans for it yet.
Yeah but is it better?
Yes. But the newer one is better better.
loved your video and you!
謝謝!
🙏🏼
Way cool 🎉
Matt, mate i salute you.... this is goodness beyond the normal. thank you

Exactly what I'm looking for and must be perfect for my old Jeep GC WJ. Thanks a lot for this creative input! I'll try it next week and will tell u. Best regards from Germany
Good luck!
Can’t you just sell these I’d buy it
The problem with selling them is I’d have to make them.
This is so well produced. Thanks for the video, man. Great job.
Have you thought of vacuum forming? There’s plenty of diy shop-vac videos, your snorkel might be constricting air flow due to size. A vacuum former may help maximize efficiency.
Definitely need to try that.
We've apparently evolved from Fred Fox n funny cat videos on the Internet, now we building stuff 😅
A Zippo for comic relief. Yes! Great project. Thanks!
Great video!
This would just fail in southern hot states. At night the heat indexes are still in the high 90’s with the heat and nasty humidity. You’d need a full sized box fan just to breath as you sleep in your sweat drenched clothes
